Chinese Room

A thought experiment proposed by philosopher John Searle in 1980 as a critique of the Turing Test. A person in a room follows rules to manipulate Chinese symbols without understanding Chinese — yet from outside, the room appears to "understand" Chinese. Searle argues this shows that passing the Turing Test does not prove genuine understanding.
