A period of reduced funding and interest in AI research, typically following a wave of over-promising and under-delivering. The first AI winter (1969–1980) was triggered partly by the Perceptrons critique. The second (1987–1993) followed the failure of expert systems. Both ended when genuinely new capabilities emerged.
